Hi all,

I have an application developed in MS Access and wish to
have a server for it as the application is growing
rapidly, approximately now its 90Mb.
Any help or comments is highly appreciated.

Thank you.
Raj.

Which server (type) are you referring to? Network / file server? Database
server such as SQL Server / Oracle / DB2?

In theory, an Access (JET) database can be up to 2 GB so 90 MB is fairly
small. In practice, the working limit is probably a lot less but 90 MB
shouldn't be a problem for a well-designed database on a good network.

Van,

Thanks for your reply. I am new to this area. We have a
network which is not so good and thats the reason I want
to have a server and eventually there will be 4-5 more
applications done in MS Access loaded to this server. I
understand that the server is also a CPU with a hard drive
and a good memory dedicated for a sole purpose.
I am not aware of Network/file server. Wjhat is it? But I
am sure its not a database server that I want as my
application is only in MS Access. And I have 45-50 people
sharing this file. I have one more question, how many
users can i have to use my application at the same time.
Currently I am running Windows 2000 professional OS with
N/W.

Help me out...I appreciate your time.
Thank you.
Looking forward.
Bye.
Raj.

I will be very surprised if you don't have a Network / file server.

If you are using Access/JET only, you only need to store the Back-End MDBs
file on a network drive that users can access since (like I wrote
previously), Access/JET is a file-sharing database, i.e. users sharing the
same data file but the work is done by the work-stations.

Perhaps, you should discuss your storage / network traffic requirements with
your network people!

Van,
Thanks for your reply. I agree we do have a network/file
server which I am aware now after your reply. Thanks a
lot. I am doing exactly the same thing you mentioned in
your reply. But still its slow. Thats why I wanted to get
an idea of which server I should recommend to my boss.

Looking forward.
Thank you.
RAJ

What things did you do?

Perhaps, you are not reading my replies carefully.

The server really doesn't do a lot (w.r.t. to the database) except sharing
the MDB file to users. I have users that still use a Compaq Pentium III as
the network / file server (W2K Small Business Server with 100 MB network
cards) and the database is still quite fast.

Provided that your network traffic is not too busy, most server hardware
will be able to handle the file-sharing required. But network traffic and
servers are really the domain of your network people and you should discuss
with them first.

Thanks Van, I will discuss with them.
