What if he purchased them? Not all people who want info about copying media steal software/music muck's

It's perfectly legal to backup your media as long as you still own the original.

Sorry but you do always bring this up and it's not fair!

Any "copying" of a shop bought CD/DVD IS illegal ... whether you own it or not.

You do NOT have a legal right in this country to break copywrite laws.

Whether or not you agree with file sharing and whether or not you agree with the ways the big corporations try to combat this 'problem', you may not post anything on these forums which can be interpreted by our moderators as directly promoting piracy.

Look, I'm sorry if you think I am being heavy handed here, I am not ...

We, Ian & the Mods, had a long discussion over how we try to keep this Forum within the bounds of Copywrite Law ... getting the wording right was not easy. We think we got the balance as close as we ever will.

We are not adverse it pointing you in the right direction of copying your own material. :)

I agree with you in some aspects of your statement!

And I agree with your decision!

We shall leave it at that :)

Actually TD I have been doing some more digging around ... :)

Acts that are allowedFair dealing is a term used to describe acts which are permitted to a certain degree without infringing the work, these acts are:

  • Private and research study purposes.
  • Performance, copies or lending for educational purposes.
  • Criticism and news reporting.
  • Incidental inclusion.
  • Copies and lending by librarians.
  • Acts for the purposes of royal commissions, statutory enquiries, judicial proceedings and parliamentary purposes.
  • Recording of broadcasts for the purposes of listening to or viewing at a more convenient time, this is known as time shifting.
  • Producing a back up copy for personal use of a computer program.
  • Playing sound recording for a non profit making organisation, club or society.(Profit making organisations and individuals should obtain a license from the Performing Rights Society.)

So, you can indeed make a "backup copy" of a computer program that you own ... however, I still cannot find any legal precedence for making "backups" of music CDs or DVDs

We in this country have always "done it" and an individual is NOT likely to be prosecuted ... however, we, as a Forum, cannot condone copying music CDs or DVDs.

ok, thanks for the advice,

the only reason i want back-up software is i don't want to damage the orignal copies,

as u know dvd's 15 pound a time, much cheaper to copy and replace than to ruin the original.
