Serial port share on network TCP/IP

N

Looking for software which allows for the sharing of a PC's serial (COM/TTY)
port over TCP/IP network.

This is NOT to share a internet connection, this IS TO SHARE serial ports on PC
which may be running:

Knoppix Linux
wimpdoze 95
wimpdoze 98SE
wimpdoze XP Pro

Software which would allow all these to share regardless of where the pot is,
linux to wimp, wimp to linux, wimp to wimp etc..

Support to access:
Modems - data and fax - ie dial out for a data connect to remote data host (not
internet) ie: think BBS or the likes
serial devices of various items like an old CP290 X10 controller, UPS's, 1 wire
interfaces etc..

Software should make the remote serial port look like a local serial port.

I would go with a hardware serial server, but single port versions of these are
too $$$. Sources of low cost <$75 single port serial TCP/IP servers, let me
know. These things cost more than a printer server.

So any software solutions to this?

Thanks in advance.

I've worked with various commercial packages that do this, with
hardware, both from Digi and Systech. I've also some something similar
with a short stack of PC/104 cards. Lantronics and several other
companies have similar products, but I'm not familiar with any free
versions. You might try Google with a search string something like
"remote modem server" or "remote serial port terminal server".

On the other hand, it's just a remote console connection in raw I/O
mode. Should be rather simple to code.
