Serial/Com Port

I have a computer with windows xp sp2 which i use for testing. I'm testing a
pos system so I had to install 2 internal pci card with 2 serial ports. The
pc comes with an intergated com1 on the mother. Once I installed the two
cards and drivers windows made the hardware settings to com9, com10, com11,
and com12. My question is there a way to change the com settings to 3-6?
The software I'm testing only supports com1-com8. Not sure why windows did
this? Any ideas or leads to change these com settings. thanks inadvance.

Go to Properties in Device Manager and change the COM number. You will
find it under the "advanced" button.

i went to device manager and tried to change the com number under the advance
button but i got a message window stating... "you must have write privileges
in the registry for this device in order to modify the device's advance
settings." My pc is a stand alone computer with only one profile and not on
a network. Any other ideas.

Then you will need to log on as an Administrator.

Are you on a client/server network? Some functions may be inaccessible by
the administrator if they're controlled by Group Policy.

Local administrator? Or is the system on a domain and being administered
that way? If that's the case you will need to work that out with them.

I'm thinking you want to open regedit to here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\SERIALCOMM

And give Full permission to "administrators" on the key.

That what i have and it's happy.
