Tom's Hardware has an interesting article on Serial ATA up. The technology is poised to replace Parallel ATA (what we all have now). It will initially have a maximum burst speed of 150 m/sec, but second and third generations are already under developpement which could theoretically reach 600 m/sec.

The only problem is that no drive today has a burst rate of over 60 m/sec, so all new standards such as ATA100 and 133 are pretty much useless, unless you're running a nice raid array.

The technology will also be hot-swappable, which is interesting. The main thing for now, however will be longer (up to 1m) and thinner cables, which means better case airflow and easier access to the hard drives in even the biggest of server cases. It's also backward compatable with Parallel ATA. Definetly a technology to look out for.
