Sending via SSL is not working with Outlook 2003

Hy,

I'm working with two systems and two Outlook-Versions.
System one with Outlook XP, System 2 with Outlook 2003.
Both systems use *identical* account informations.

Both are able to retrieve mails via SSL form the
mailserver.

Only Outlook XP is able to send mails through SMTP via SSL.

Outlook 2003 fails with error 0x800ccc7d. (I know, this
error means, that Outlook thinks the mailserver is not
able to use SSL.)

The mailserver has a selfsigned certificate. I guess, this
causes the bug. (Maybe the popup window hangs?)

Is there a fix available?

Outlook 2003 does not show any dialogs concerning certificates. Therefore
if you have a certificate that needs to be acknowledge for any reason,
Outlook 2003 will just fail the connection outright. Because you are using
a self-signed certificate, you will need to install a copy of the signing CA
on the desktop.

Hy,

but Outlook 2003 shows a dialog box before receiving
emails from the mailserver via ssl. As in Outlook XP, you
are asked if you really want to use the selfsinged
certificate.

The difference is, that in Outlook XP this box appears
also for sending to the mailserver, but not for Outlook
2003.

So I guesed it might be a bug?!

(I know, if I would install the certificate, I would'nt
get the box at all.)

I can send a note into Microsoft and ask, but I'm not sure that it is since
RPC over HTTPs behaves the same.

Here is the solution to this problem. It worked for me and I'm
"SURE" this will work for you.

1) If you have read receipts that won't send, try changing the SMTP
server for the account to a server you can access and change it back to

the one you normally use for the account. If they still won''t send,
you can delete them from the data store by following these steps.

2) Close Outlook, download and install OutlookSpy at
http://www.dimastr.com/outspy/

3) Select the folder you need to delete a hidden item from. For Read
Receipts, this is the top level of your message store (Outlook Today
folder).

4)After selecting the folder, click the IMsgStore button on the
OutlookSpy toolbar.

5)In the new window, click the Open Root Container button at the top
left of the window to open a new window.

6)Click the GetContents Table tab. The receipts are listed on the left.

Select a receipt, choose Open entry button and a new window opens.

7)Click on IMsgStore::Abort Submit. Click OK, close the window. Now
choose Delete. Repeat for each receipt. Close all OutlookSpy windows
when you are finished. Close Outlook and uninstall OutlookSpy.
