Sending mail that I haven't sent!

Sometimes when I launch Outlook the box appears saying
sending 1 of 2 messages. But I have no messages in my
outbox waiting to be sent, and when I check the Sent items
list there is nothing new there. Am I unwittingly sending
on hidden emails, possibly with viruses attached? And if
so how can I stop this from happening. I've received a lot
of unsolicited virus infected emails recently which
thankfully Norton Pro has detected and deleted but I'm
just wondering if something is getting through. A full
virus scan on my computer has shown it to be all clear.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Clive asked:
