Sending email to group of contacts

Hi - I have more than 3,000 contacts and I put them in various categories.
For instance, holiday cards, intermediary contacts, personal, etc. Let's say
that I want to send an email to all of my contacts that I have checked as
personal. This information changes so often, I hesitate to create a
distribution list each time if I can simply mail to those that I have
indicated belong in a group. I appreciate any guidance that you can offer.
