When I click send/Receive nothing happens but if I choose either separately
then I connect and send or receive mails - this didn't happen on my previous
PC, both are vista.

Are you using a 64bit version of Vista. i did not have the problem on a 32
bit version of Vista . the 64 bit version states errors have occurred and
does nothing.
ithen have to receive or send individually.

The loading of the program does the receiving which thereafter happens
automatically, sending is best done when the email is compiled.

However it is a problem that needs sorting

I'm on a 32 bit (whatever that is). Thanks

That problem is usually caused by interference from an antivirus program.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:

Thanks for that. Interesting answer and I checked out the link. Unfortunately
it didn't help to change settings to not scanning e-mails. And doesn't
changing (is it upgrading?) to Windows Live mail mean that i then have to be
online to access all mail even sent/deleted etc?

No, Windows Live Mail (WLM) is not webmail. It is a desktop mail client
program just like Windows Mail.
Which antivirus program do you have?
