In Outlook and Outlook Express I put a shortcut on my desk that would open
a new email message window. In Windows Mail on Vista I haven't yet figured
out how to do that. Can someone help me with this? Basically, I want to
click on the shortcut, have it open a new message window where I can type my
message, just like I would do if I had Windows Mail up and running.

Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Mail.
Right click WinMail.exe
Select SendTo.
Read the choices.

When I do that I see the choice to sent to mail recipient. If I click on
that it opens up the mail window with an attachment of WinMail.exe. I don't
think I want to send somebody a copy of the program. And, that still doesn't
put it on my desktop.

If I put a WinMail shortcut on my desktop and right click it I still have an
option to send to a mail recipient, but it again wants to sent with an
attachment, this time to WinMail shortcut.

I am missing something?

Right-click on the Desktop. Select New, Shortcut.
Type "MailTo:" without the quotes. Click Next.
Type a shortcut name, like 'Mail'. Click OK.

Glad to help. I didn't know how to do it, so I researched
it through Google. Learn something new every day!

I just tested that shortcut again, and it works as expected.
I don't know why it doesn't open a new message window for you.

Thanks for that follow-up report. Good find!
Looks like each new piece of software that's released
causes an obscure problem somewhere else. :-(

Incidentally, I also have Firefox 3.0, but it did not cause that
particular problem for me.
