send and recieve do nothing

[send and recieve died]

Suddenly, my send and recieve fail to operate. I'm online
(modem) and can surf the web, but can only acess my
earthlink by going to webmail.

This is exactly what I have, except that, when I click on
the send/receive, it pops up a window that says "operation
failed", with no further information.
