I would like to donate 1 of 2 Win XP computers that I
have registered to myself in order to make room to build
another computer using Win XP.

Would this be legal, and, if so, what would new owner
have to do to register himself as the owner?

If Windows came with the computer, it is registered to that computer, so
yes, it would be legal.

Provided you are including the Windows XP CD, product key, and other
documentation with the computers there should be no problem.

Just give them a "bill of sale" describing the items and edit the
Registry to change the display name of the owner.

The Windows XP Activation is not concerned with the name - just the
unique characteristics of the computer hardware it is installed on.

The only complication is if the Windows XP OS is an OEM
version. If it is OEM you must provide the OS and media to
the new owner. If it is a retail (full or upgrade), you can
remove it from the computer, reinstalling the previous OS.

The query though was in terms of giving the *computer* - complete with
software. And the software is linked (through activation or otherwise)
to the computer, which is what matters
