SELLING ACCESS DATABASES

P

Peter

Hi
I have made a couple of databases and I am planning on
selling them to different Busineses. I would like to
find some one who sells Access databases in Canada.
I want to know how I should copy write the programs.
how much the program might be worth

Does Micrsoft help sell great databases on their web site
etc.

It is not clear what you mean by database.

Do you mean a database of people who purchased red cars,or perhaps some type
of specialized demographic data? If you are just selling data, then I not
sure if ms-access is the best solution here.

Or, do you mean that you are not trying to sell data, but in fact sell an
applications?

If you are selling an application, then why should the customer care if it
is in ms-access? You sell a job-costing package, do you care if it is
written in VB, or c++ or ms-access? As a general rule, the user will not,
and should not care (this assumes you done a good job, and built a nice
windows interface for ms-access). I talk about building good interfaces for
ms-access here:

Anyway, it is not clear if you are tying to sell data, or simply sell a
windows application. Perhaps, you are trying to sell something to ms-access
developers, and thus ms-access WOULD be important here?

If you are talking about creating a windows application, and selling it,
then you have instant copyright just like you do with any written works.
This means that if I copy your program, I can go to jail (there is NO
registering required for this protection).

On the other hand, I can look at your program, and build something that does
the same thing, and you can't for all purposes protect against that.

If you are talking about just selling a windows application, then ms-access
should not be a an issue here (and, then you got the wrong newsgroup!). Any
newsgroup, or organization devoted to selling software should be ok.

I mean, the VERY successful Simply Accounting package uses the same file
format and data engine that ms-access users. Do you think users really care
that behind the scenes of Simply Accounting, that a ms-access database is
used? (most users don't care..but it is kind of cool that you can open a
Simply Accounting database with ms-access!). And, if you are tying to
integrate a account solution for a small business, then being able to grab
data from the accounting system can be a real plus.

Albert questioned whether you are selling data or an application....
but he didn't follow up about if you're selling data. It might be
obvious to most (and possibly you, too) that you can't copyright your
data. ie, if you're just selling something like a database of
genealogy information (for example), then that can't be copyrighted.
The "form" in which you present the data is the only thing that can be
copyrighted, not the data itself.
