Does XP professional SP2 include a function like the files and folders
sharing in Win98 where a password is given to the share so that only those
who know the password can access.
Application: 10 users (pc's) on a network who want to store private files on
a central PC drive not access by other useres except the admin of the central
PC

No, Windows XP doesn't have passwords for shared disks and folders.

In Windows XP Professional, you can disable "simple file sharing" and
define access control lists that specify user names and their allowed
mode of access. Ron Lowe and I have written a web page with details:

Thanks Steve for the url to an excelent document you put a lot of work on for
all of us. But help me a bit further:
I disebeled simple file sharing.
I went to a file to be shared. kick sharing. kick permissions. and see only
everyone.
kick add. in the second line I see only the local computer not the network
and so not the network users to grant permission:
Did I something wrong or did I not understand things well from the document?

You're welcome, Lodi. You're right that you can only add permissions
for user accounts on the local computer. So, create user accounts on
your computer that have the same user names and passwords that are
used on the other computers, as shown here:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/02createusers.htm

Then, set up permissions for the local accounts, as shown here:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/06acl.htm

The permissions that you set up for the local accounts will apply to
the same accounts on the other computers.
