Selection problem in NTBackup

Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

When I select a directory in the tree view it selects all sub-dirs and
files (puts a blue checkmark in the checkbox), however if I then want to
deselect some sub-dirs I click on the relevant checkbox and rather than
unchecking that item it changes the checkmarks for _everything_ to grey.

A quick test has shown that it does actually deselect the items I click
on but there is no visual feedback so you can't tell what is selected
and what isn't. This is a *big* problem in Documents and Settings where
there are thousands of directories and tens of thousands of files.

I've tried pressing various combinations of SHIFT, CTRL, and ALT when
clicking but it makes no difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The gray box is what tells you that you aren't selecting all, or selecting
none, but selecting *some*.
In the tree, if you expand the folder you deselected, the checkboxes next to
the *underlying* folders/items should be blank - are they? I don't know why
the 'top' deselected folder still shows up as gray - it does so on my
computer as well. I think it's just an NTBackup thing....

How many separate items are you deselecting, and if there are a lot of
individual "deslections", why? You can save the backup settings as a .bks
file and not have to do this all the time....

Yes, I realize that but surely only the parent should have a grey check?

Ah, yes, so they do; still doesn't help though.

That's a bug in my book.

That's what I want to do. Once I've got the selection I'll save it.
Basically I'm creating a "mopping up" backup to backup everything under
Documents and Settings that isn't backed up on another tape. For
example, My Pictures and My Music are on one tape, Appliaction Data is
on another, and there is some stuff that I'm not bothered about backing up.

Thanks for confirming that it's not just me who sees this problem

Thank God
Other people have finally noticed this *BUG*. And yes it is a bug. It is impossible to tell when you have unselected anything. The only answer is to hope you have got it right, save the selections and then reload them at which point they will display as expected. To double check I always have to check the bkp file with notepad now
For the record, Windows Server 2003 and XP have this bug but if you jump back to Windows Server 2000 it all acts as one would expect
A little bit of inattention has occurred in the MS troops on this one, especially since they should have picked it up in XP before Win2003 Server ever shipped

Sincerely
Elle
