selection color changed after directx game ends

My desktop color depth is 32 bit @ 1024x768, and I have
custom colors, including a selection color which is not one
of the ones from the color dialog. When directx games end,
my selection color changes to the closest matching color
within the color dialog.

My workaround has been to make 2 identical schemes, and
change to the other one after these games end, but it's a
pain. Is there a fix for this problem? [starcraft
broodwar and zDoom both cause this to happen]

This doesn't happen on my XP machine nor on my 9.x
alternate boots.

It's not just my selection color that changes. Also my
Active Title bar and probably Inactive ones too.

This effect only occurs after full screen DirectX games
end, and it looks like all the colors in my color scheme
get mapped into a 256 color pallet. The only color that is
actually correct after the game ends is the desktop.

To get this effect, you have to be in 16 or 32 bit depth
and use custom colors rather than the 64 or so standard
ones that appear in the color common dialog.

I don't think it's relevant, but my video card is a
GeForce2 MX400 with 64MB and the latest WHQL'd drivers.
[it's occured in every driver version and also on my older
MatroxG200 card with up to date drivers]
