Selecting Text - How can I make it less "Smart" ?

When selecting text in windows or an msOffice product, I dislike the way
windows tries to anticipate what text I want to select, and it automatically
selects whole words / sentences.
Is there a way to disable this "Smart" select feature, and let me select my
text the old-fashioned way - One letter at a time ?

Tools | Options | Edit tab | UNCheck: When selecting, automatically select
entire word
