Selecting multiple files

When I try to select multiple files in a list, the first file I
(single)click on opens. I don't get a chance to press SHIFT or CTRL.
 
Go to Folder Options / General and see if you have "Single click to
open an item" slected - if so, change it to "Double click ...."
