Selecting and Backspace don't work

Whenever I try to delete text by selecting it and either pasting other text,
or by hitting the backspace key, nothing happens. Only the actual delete key
works. Is there anything I can do to change this. It's eating up time in my
school work.

Tools | Options | Edit: Typing replaces selection (Backspace is considered
"typing").
