selected text does not get replaced when I type. Why not?

I must have pushed some keystroke combination by accident. Now, when I have
selected text to replace and I type something, it just inserts next to the
selected text instead of replacing it. What did I push?
 
Try Tools > Options, on the Edit tab check "Typing replaces selection".

I have had this problem for a looong time and I have searched all over the
