Select Text Vertically

In WORD 2007, when I try to select text vertically by using ALT+Mouse, I get
the 'Search' pane....How do I select text vertically....???

It would be best to ask in a Word forum. This one is for discussions about
Microsoft Access, a relational database program. The web interface is not
always clear.
