select less than a paragraph

One of my coworkers has some feature enabled in Word 2000 that causes entire
paragraphs to be selected any time a paragraph boundary is crossed in
selection. (FWIW, the selection gets extended on mouse-up, not while he's
dragging.) Does anyone know how to turn this off? It's driving him nuts.

It doesn't happen for me, and we can't see what the difference in settings
is between us. Both of us have "Use smart cut and paste" and "When
selecting, automatically select entire word" turned OFF.

I don't have Word 2000 anymore, so I can't check for sure... however, Word
XP and 2003 have, in Tools - Options - Edit, a Smart Paragraph Selection
option. Does Word 2000 have that option?

Herb, I just checked, and that option was new in XP. So that isn't
Walter's problem... I wish I had a good suggestion, but I've never
heard of this one before.

The only way I can simulate that effect is if I double-click in the margin
to select the first paragraph, then drag down. When you begin the selection
that way, additional selection is paragraph by paragraph. Other than that,
I'm stumped.
