seeing other computers via vpn

I have set up a vpn between work (xp home) and home (xp pro) when I get home
and dial in it says that I am connected. I then look at the properties of the
connection and see the ip address of the vpn server (it's different from the
host computer I connect to by the way) put in the server ip address into the
browser bar and I can see my shared files on the host computer. However I can
NOT see the other computers in my office remotely over the VPN (I CAN see
them when I am at work though) I have configured my firewall to accept
exceptions etc. do I need to turn my wf off completely before I can see the
other drives on my work Lan?

No, your wireless has nothing to do with this. Browsing across a VPN is
rarely easy, if at all possible - browsing uses NetBIOS, which isn't
routable. If your office has a WINS server, you can try putting that
server's IP address for WINS in your VPN client properties. Or try lmhosts.
This all may or may not work, depending on your office network config.

can I easily configure my work computer ( the host acting as the server in
the vpn) to use wins instead of netbios to see the other computers on my
network?

WINS *is* NetBIOS, in a sense.
If your company uses a WINS server, all the workstations there need to have
it specified in their ipconfig properties and must be registered in the WINS
database.
If you use AD, you will have an internal DNS server as well (in fact, you
don't have to have AD to use that), so you should be using the internal DNS
server in your VPN client also.
