I have recently set up a home network with two computers, my one has the
router and the other one has wireless connectivity. The other computer can
connect to the internet so can mine, but when i come to look in the shared
folders for the other computer, nothing comes up. So i view the all computers
in my work group and again nothing comes up apart from mine on my computer
and thiers on thier computer. It seems like this is the most basic of tasks
but it just wont work. Ive checked that we are on the same user groups and
ive also run the network id set up wizard in system, tried using both home
network and business network, restarted after each one, but still nothing. It
also was the same when i took my PC round to a friends house, i could all see
them on the network but they couldnt see me. Ii was the only one running XP
Pro. Have another computer with normal XP. Tried to network that one and i
still couldnt see my XP Pro computer, but on my XP Pro computer i could see
the XP one. Please can anybody help, its driving me nuts.

What happens if you log onto both computers and then walk away for at least
15 minutes? Can you browse the network then?

Is NetBIOS enabled on your TCP/IP properties? Are you running a firewall?

Tony,

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service shows
with Status = Started.

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF / WF, or third party)? If
so, you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445
and UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computers as present in
the Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of
(network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
