Security Update for Microsoft Windows (819696)

A

Andy

I have installed this update 38 times, all successful
except once according to the update history. The
unsuccessful update occured roughly half way through the
update history list. Even after I've installed this
update, if I immediately go to Microsoft's Windows Update
site and have it scan my computer it still tells me I
need to install this same update. I have my Windows
automatic update turned on and this is getting kind of
annoying having to install this update everytime I turn
on my computer.

Operating System: Windows XP Professional
DirectX Version: 9.0a(4.09.0000.0901)

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Andy,

Start/run regedit

Confirm that this registry key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX

See if the "Version" string reads: 4.09.00.0902

Then confirm that this registry key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\DirectX\dx819696

Double-click the "IsInstalled" string and make sure the value is 1. If it
isn't, try changing it before proceeding to the next step.

If they don't correspond, go here and download the standalone version and
install it:

I had a similar problem, and after reading you Email I found a little
bit different solution which had the same effect.
Hi Andy,

Start/run regedit

Confirm that this registry key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX

See if the "Version" string reads: 4.09.00.0902
My version was 4.09.00.0902
Then confirm that this registry key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\DirectX\dx819696

Double-click the "IsInstalled" string and make sure the value is 1. If it
isn't, try changing it before proceeding to the next step.
The 1 was properly set.
If they don't correspond, go here and download the standalone version and
install it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...9E-07C1-462A-BAEF-5EAB5C851CF5&displaylang=en
Before trying the direct install, I did a scan for updates. The 819696
was still listed as a critical update. However I noticed that there was
a WXP "DirectX 9.0b End-user runtime" to be installed, which I did.
Then I again scanned for WXP updates and there were no critical updates
to be installed. I checked regedit and found that the version string
read 4.09.00.0902, and the ïsInstalled"string was still 1.

I guess the moral of the story is that some of the WinXP recommended
updates have to be installed before the critical updates can do their thing.
