Security properties for folders

D

Dr. Indera

hello,

i just noticed that on some folders when you right click and select
properties that on the security tab, there are 2 names/accounts -
administrator (indera\administrator)
everyone

at the bottom of this window, all of the option in the allow column are
checked for both accounts, but are grayed out. is this the way things are
suppose to be set up?

when i clicked on the "Add" button, there are about 30 options there. i am
the only person that uses my computer and don't recall setting up all of the
accounts that are listed there. where did they come from?

i've found out that i am not suppose to be using the administrator account,
<by reading messages on this board>.
i guess the one that's the first one listed above. i've had the laptop for 3
years and that was the account that came setup on the machine when i bought
it, so i used it.

the reason i'm asking is because every so often, when i try to open some of
the web sites that i've built, i get a message that says that i do not have
permission. i'll go to the folder and sure enough there are no rights for
the administrator account above for the files and folders that have the web
pages.

i don't change any of these settings because i really do not understand
them, so i'm wondering how the account can loose rights to things that it's
had rights to before.

i run virus scan, with updated files, spybot, adware at least once a week
and haven't had a problem there, according to the software <smile>

i am concerned that there is a problem that i'm not aware of. i don't know
if it matters, but my hard drive is in ntfs format.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you
indera

I think there is no problem with your computer. Administrator is a default
account created and has full control/permission on all files and folders of
the computer. Everyone is a group and as the name says all users are
members of this group. By default, Everyone group also has Full Control
permission at the Volume level (i.e. C: drive, D: drive etc.). The same
Full Control permission flows down to folder and subfolder level for these
account/group. This is called Inheritance. That is why you see the greyed
check boxes in Properties/Security window.

Coming to the websites you create/manage, there is another layer of
security on the web server which may be the point of concern here. If you
can tell me what action you normally take when you cannot access the web
pages, so that you can see them again, it will help to analyse the
situation.
