Security On Database

Melissa

Hi there

I would like to know, if for example your hard drive crashes and then
someone is able to retrieve your Access database off your pc, will your
password still be securing the database, or would someone be able to open
it?

Thank you kindly

Are you talking about applying a database password, or are you talking about
having applied Access User-Level Security, whereby you have to supply a user
name and password?

A database password lives with the database, so it'll still be there in a
copy.

If Access User-Level Security is applied properly, then you'll need to have
the associated workgroup file (.MDW file) in order to be able to use the
database. Unfortunately, many people don't apply ULS properly, meaning that
it's possible to get into the database without the MDW file.

Doug already answered the main points of your question, but I would
like to add that you should be able to throw your db and your
harddrive in the garbage at any point in time, and should be able to
recover the important files from backup without fault. If you are not
ABSOLUTELY SURE of that, you need to work towards that goal.

'Cause one day that MTBF = Mean Time Between Failures that harddrives
are measured in will bite you, and you will want to be prepared.
