security login

I'm using FrontPage 2000. I would like to input my user name and password so
that when I upload changes to the web I don't have to type them in everytime
I restart FrontPage. Unfortunately the security submenu on the Tools menu is
greyed out.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

That menu is grayed out if you don't have the server based web open or your
web host doesn't allow you access to it. In any case, there's nothing in
that menu that will let you do what you're describing. When you open your
live web site in FrontPage (File, Open Site) and put in your user name and
password, check the box to remember the password and the next time you open
the site it should remember you.

FrontPage Passwords are stored by Internet Explorer.

In IE, Tools->Internet Options - Security Tab

Click on Trusted Sites, and click on Sites button.
Add your website to the zone (use the full address, starting with
http:// ) You may have to clear the box labelled "Require server
verification (https:) ..... "
Click OK

Click: Custom Level
Scroll down to User Authentication
Select "Automatic Logon with current username and password"
Click OK, click OK

In FrontPage, if you are prompted for the password, tick the box
"Remember this password"

Note that the web may publish or open without any prompt for UserId or
Password.

Hi David,

I guess that I may not have given enough information. I don't work on my
live site. I work on a copy that is located on my local harddrive. When I
click the PublishWeb button on the toolbar, I get a logon box that asks for
user name and password. My real name is defaulted into the user name field,
and the password field is blank.

This is the logon box that I would like to have default in my user name and
password.

Thanks!

Alan

Hi Ronx,

Thanks for the info. However, as I told David (who posted the other
response)

So hopefully one of you will be able to help me out.

Thanks!

You need to open your live site once in FrontPage (File, Open Site,
http://www.yoursite.com) Then put in your user name and password and check
remember password. Then you can close it. Now when you go to publish from
your hard drive it should remember you.

Hi David,

Yes, I tried that before I wrote back to you the first time. It didn't help.

Hi Ronx,

The problem with this method is that the user name and password that I use
to log onto my computer are not the user name and password that I use to log
onto my website to publish.

Thanks,

Alan

Your PC login and your IE stored credentials for sites (used by FP) are not related at all
- follow Ronx instructions to set your site in a trusted zone

This is the set up I have on 2 out of 3 PCs. The userid and Password
for the website are definitely NOT the same as used for the PC in use.
Computer 1 - I go straight into the website - without entering userId
and Password.
Computer 2 - the login prompt is displayed with correct userid and
password filled in.
Computer 3 - Userid is filled in, but password is blank. This computer
does not have the site in trusted sites zone, but "Save Password" is
ticked every time.

This does not work with FTP, and will only work if you have selected the
"Save Password" box on the login dialogue.

On a site (in my LAN) where the userId and Password are identical to my
PC login, the website login dialogue is never shown (except on computer
3).

Hi,
The security option on the Tools menu is greyed out because this applies
only to the live site. When you click 'Publish Site' - log in as normal.
At the foot of the window you have a couple of links - Click 'Open your
remote website in FrontPage' - this will open the live site and the security
option will then show in the Tools menu. Beware, that if you make changes on
this site, it won't show on your offline site unles you synch the two.

Not sure how this applies to saving your password though - there should be a
checkbox on the login prompt screen to save this - just tick the box to save
it for the future before clicking ok.
