Weird XP - Frontpage problem...

I ran into an odd issue. I have a site that was created in FP2002/2003
with links to MS-Word docs. The site works fine, you can click on the
links, the docs appear in MSIE. No problems.

The problem arises when I click the back button in the browser to
return to the previous page (the page with the link to the Word doc)
after viewing the word doc. I get a pop-up from the browser to enter
the username/password for "Secured Frontpage on xxxx". Keep in
mind I was just on the page I am trying to go back to about 10
seconds before. It is *not* a secure page. In fact,if I click "cancel"
in the password prompt box, it gives me the page anyway.

I tried flushing the MSIE cache, rebooting, republishing the entire
site, etc. The problem occurs only from one XP system. I tested from
another XP system and from other win2K systems and had no problems.
I even created a new site with a link to a word doc and it worked
fine.

What should I do to fix either this client or this web ?

Thanks,

Steve, (or anyone else for that matter)

I don't know if you can help. I checked out your link to the Microsoft
article, and looked for related articles, because I have a similar, but not
identical problem, which has manifested itself just recently.

I have a web page at www.askiain.co.uk (the page is default.htm). As I'm
sure you know, since default.htm is in the list of recognised opening pages,
it is not necessary to type default.htm into the address. If I click the
link to the domain on its own (the "default" page being supplied by the
server) the pages opens normally. If I specify the page (
www.askiain.co.uk/default.htm ) I get the login prompt dialogue box, along
with the same message as Bobo - "Secured Frontpage on www.askiain.co.uk ".
Clicking cancel loads the page ok anyway. I fact, the page has already
loaded and is sitting there with the dialogue box in front.

I have other sites which now respond in exactly the same way. These sites
have been around for a while, without this happening. Something must have
changed recently.

All sites were created in Frontpage 2003.

This only happens on one of my 2 computers (running Win 2k), and only when
using Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1. Using Netscape and another browser on this
computer all pages open normally. Using Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 on my
other computer (running Win XP Pro) all pages open normally.

I've reinstalled Internet Explorer on this computer, but to no effect. By
the way, this is the computer running Frontpage 2003, on which I designed
the sites.

It does seem like a configuration issue with Internet Explorer, but I can't
figure out what has changed recently to have caused it.

Any ideas?

Iain

Not seeing this issue here. I can load the site either way.

However, loading it via www.askiain.co.uk/default.htm the sound file doesn't play.

Thanks for looking Thomas,

That's the problem. The page loads ok whichever way I do it. The login
dialogue box only appears on this one computer, and only when browsing with
Internet Explorer, and only when I specify a page name. Just linking to the
folder doesn't do it. Everything seems to point to a bad installation of, or
dodgy setting in, Internet Explorer. That's why I re-installed it from the
web. Could it be a settings thing in Internet Explorer? I wonder if I should
uninstall Internet Explorer and re-install?

Interesting, what you said about the sound file. It plays ok in this
(possibly) dodgy Internet Explorer, whichever link I click. Netscape, of
course doesn't play the sound file, and doesn't display the yellow "Alt"
comment, either.

I just got round it.

In the Internet Explorer security settings, the setting for User
Authentication was set to "Automatic Logon only in intranet zone". I changed
it "Anonymous" and no more dialogue box.

Now I can't remember if it used to be different. I also can't remember
what's the best setting?

Iain

Thanks Steve, I will check it out.

Well, checked... didn't work. Looks like it should have but it didn't.
Then I realized that the fix was for Word 2003 and I have 2000, so
I found this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306534

Unfortunately there are no links to the fix.

But, it described the problem from another viewpoint and I realized
that by removing the web site from "My Network Places" (put there by
FP use) that I could eliminate the problem. So, FP does _cause_ the
problem, in a backhand way since the sites get there after publishing
in FP.

Just thought I'd say thanks to Steve and Bobo for spotting this, and
connecting it to FrontPage - this has been driving me nuts. A good bit of
lateral thinking on Bobo's part!

It'll save me ages in continually logging in to pages which I want to
"preview in browser" when developing sites.

As it turns out I'm quite grateful really, as it's made me start using
Netscape Navigator 7.2 as an alternative browser. What a difference!

The fact that you can open links in different tabs within the same instance
of Netscape has made life so much easier - especially when using eBay! Not
to mention the fact that when I open a link to a password protected page, it
offers me a list of previously used logins and passwords, rather than just
the last one used (eBay again, hotmail etc)

Thanks again,

Iain
