Secure web service from Pocket PC

I have an app that I build with VS2005 running on a Windows Mobile5 device
that consumes a web service. What must I do to ensure that the login portion
of the web service interaction is encrypted? We are concerned about the
username and password being sent over http in clear text.
 
You can either use HTTPS for your wev service or encrypt/decrypt the login
yourself.
