Secure sites and proxy server

My PC is part of a domain. It runs Windows XP Professional and i'm using IE6
and Mozilla. To use the internet you need to go thru a proxy server. I've got
internet access.

Using Mozilla : When I go to normal web sites everything works fine, but as
soon as I try to go to a Banking Site (Secure Site) my PC asked me for a
authentication to go thru the proxy server.

Using IE6 : The secure site is just not opening. It says the site does not
exist.

I would check with the proxy server administrator to find out what the
problem is.

Things to check:
Under local security settings, on the security options page, do you have
"use FIPS" turned on? I've seen that block out internet web sites.

Second-- try Firefox. Firefox can tell you what the error or
problem is when IE just gives (site not found).

I had this problem trying to connect to an MS-https download site.
IE6 would just act like the site did not exist -- gave the can't resolve
DNS name error.

I tried it with Firefox, and it brought up a security warning
dialog -- the website was using a type of self-signed cert (microsoft cert
authority). W/FF I had the choice of accepting the questioable cert for just
one session, or 'permanently'. Going back to the site with IE6, it continued
to claim the site didn't exist. Howeverr, if I used http: to access the same
website name, IE could find it with no problem -- it was just this one MS site,
and only in https mode.

My guess was that maybe my computer wasn't up-to-date with the latest
certficate downloads (this should be enabled in the Software Add/Remove ->
Add/remove windows components, option "Update Root Certificates".

I think there's a knowledge base article about the problem, and it
has a hotpatch available, but they suggest you wait until Service Pack 3 (the
next released service pack), due out in 2008, last I heard....:-/
