secure/nonsecure items dialog box is a PITA

N

newsrider3

When I'm at a https site and loading different pages therein, I get the
following dialog box query very very frequently:

Security Information
This page contains both secure and nonsecure items.
Do you want to display the nonsecure items?
Yes No More Info*

There is not the usual checkbox so I can opt out of receiving this notice.
It is coming up much too frequently, and I must X it off each time, so it is
becoming a royal PITA.

How can I kill it?

*Downloading non-secure content from a secure Web site

The Web site you are viewing is a secure site. It uses a security protocol
such as SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or PCT (Private Communications
Technology) to secure the information you send and receive.
When sites use a security protocol, information that you provide, such as
your name or credit-card number, is encrypted so that other people can't
read it. However, this Web page also contains items that do not use this
secure protocol.
Given what you know about this Web site and your computer, you must decide
whether to continue working with this site.

If you do not feel confident about working with this site, click No.

Hi,

If you want to disable this box, try the following:

Close all Internet Explorer sessions.
Spawn a single Internet Explorer session and,
Click on Tools, Internet Options.
Click on the Security tab.
Click on the Internet Icon (the globe), and then,
Click on the "Custom Level" button.

Scroll down to the "Miscellaneous" section.
Look for the section titled, "Display Mixed Content".

Depending on your preference, either set this to 'Disable' or 'Enable'.
For security reasons, it's recomended you select the 'Disable' radio option.

Click on OK to exit the Security Settings settings box.

Click on OK to save and exit the Internet Explorer dialog box.

This should remedy your problem.

Best regards,

Altrus

Thanks. I'll give it a try. But if "disable" kills content that I need to
see, then I'll have to set it to "enable"- regardless of any so-called
security risk. I think Bill Gates is getting too paranoid. We must have a
functional browser!

Well,

If the website is designed properly, then all essential content should be
secured - there should be absolutely NO need to see any unsecured content. If
you need to see unsecured content on a secure page, then it's not very secure,
is it? :p

I've tested it, and will have to leave it enabled. For example if I want to
lookup a WhoIs, it brings up a graphic code which only humans can read. I
have to read the code and enter it before the WhoIs lookup will work. That
requires the "enabled" setting, otherwise the graphic doesn't appear. Bad
design, good design, is irrelevant here - I must have functionality, and
will have to take whatever risk is involved. Thanks for your help.

Try going to internet options..advanced tab..scroll down to the bottom and
uncheck warn if changing between secure and not secure modes.

If you are using Internet Explorer 5, have a look at this link:

Incorrect Error Message When Connecting to Secure Web Sites [Q273903]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q273903

Also, if you go to IE tools, internet options, security in IE6 there is an
option under internet zone for 'display mixed content'. If this option is
set to prompt, you will get the message you describe.

If the problem involves a PDF file, and a secure site, check out the URL
below:

Finally, have a look at this link - in this case there's nothing you can do
personally to fix the error; you can only wait for the website's author to
fix their problem:

That option is already unchecked, which doesn't prevent that dialog box
warning from appearing. One is changing from secure to nonsecure modes. The
other is mixing the content on a webpage from secure and nonsecure sources.
I know it sounds similar, but it's not the same thing.

That's the one. Setting it to "enable" fixes my problem. There's an
associated risk but I'll have to take it. I need to see what certain secure
websites will otherwise not show me. I'm told that's bad web design, but if
so it's fairly common on the internet. Some pretty essential and otherwise
reliable sites have the "flaw". The one I'm thinking of is one of the bigger
domain registrars. The "flaw" happens with their WhoIs lookup.
