Second SCSI drive not recognized

I am running Win2000 on a Shuttle motherboard, with an Adaptec 29160
controller. The only IDE drive is the CD. I have two IBM 18 GB
HDD's. They are not the same model. When I turn on Domain
Validation, the second drive operates at 40 MB/s, instead of 160 MB/s,
which, of course, slows down the entire chain to 40. The drive
manufacturer tells me that this is because it does not support Domain
Validation. When in this configuration, the drive shows up in the
Drive Management console. When I turn off the Domain Validation, the
second drive now runs at 160 like it should, and is recognized by the
SCSI BIOS. But it doesn't show up in the Drive Management console. I
can't format it or use it. Can anyone help?

According to IBM "SCSI general information - Servers and
IntelliStation" (see URL [unwrap lines!]:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?
lndocid=MIGR-40595
"Domain Validation intelligently verifies system
configuration, testing during the boot cycle or on
introduction of a new device for the maximum speed the
target can maintain."
Perhaps you should "believe" its opinion when it limits
the data transfer rate of your HDD to 40MBytes/sec.

I would "believe" it except for two things:

1. The manufacturer said that the drive does not support Domain Validation.

2. The drive is a U160 drive, and should run at 160.
