I had an e-machine that cooked.(motherboard) I would like to put that
harddrive into my new gateway and recover the files. both systems was and is
windows xp. any advice or help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hopefully both drives same type ie ATA or SATA. Remve drive from bad
machine. Set jumper to slave. Install in good machine. Connect data cable
and power. That's all that should be required. You should see new drive as
E: or F: depending how many optical drives you have.

How can it be determined what the drive type is? I am looking at the drive I
removed from my e-machine and I see nothing as far as type is.

SATA drives are new and in high end machines.
The data cable is small.

ATA uses a 40 pin cable.

You may have to check the jumper setting on the hard drive in the good
machine.
Some drives are set to cable select or master only.
