Seasonic versus Antec

Hi All

I am considering a Seasonic S12/500w versus Antec 550W Neo HE Power
Which to choose or is just a matter of preferences?

The PSU will feed an MSI K8N-NE4 FI equipped with an AMD 64 4000+ and a MSI
X1950XT (256Mb)
3 HD's and two DVD drives
And hopefully be good for an upgrade later on

I have a Seasonic S12/500W running on a similar rig without probs
It's just that my regular store does not have Hitachi drives (7K160
SATA-II ) and the other store does not have Seasonic but Antec
Toms HW claims that the Hitachi drives has an edge of better performance for
a system drive :)

Comments?

Thanks/Peter

Go with the Seasonic. If you must buy from one store, just find another
good brand of hard drive. All hard drive manufacturers crank out a dud now
and then. But stick with brands like seagate, western digital and samsung,
and your odds of getting a good drive are greatly increased. If your
regular store doesn't carry any of those brands, you need to find a new
regular store. (!) As for the Hitachi having a performance edge? Hey, in
my experience with thousands of those drives, Hitachi seems to be just as
good as samsung or wd or seagate. Are they better, performance wise? Not
in my opinion. I'm betting Toms HW ran some kind of benchmark that showed
the Hitachi had slightly better numbers than certain other drives. Will it
make a significant difference in the performance of your system, however?
No. You likely won't notice, not even if YOU run benchmarks. For a system
drive, you want 7200RPM or 10KRPM, either with 8MB of cache or more.
SATA-II is the way to go, at the moment. But I wouldn't choose a Hitachi
over anything else just because Toms HW says it has an edge of performance.
The difference is likely not significant, at all. -Dave

I replaced power supplies on a regular basis until finally getting my
True Power series from Antec.

As for Hitachi (IBM) hard drives, NEVER AGAIN. Bad drive but serious
hassles regarding still under warranty support. Never had any hassles
with WD though.
