Re a thread about the crappiness of Microsoft's Search utility

Does anyone know how to make the search thing *not* look inside zipped
folders? The take a lot longer to search than ordinary folders, and in
99.99% of the times I want to search for something, the things I want
to find are not in the zipped folders. I know this, because I put
things into zipped folders when I don't specifically need them, and I
usually remember which folders I put them into. I don't *need* to
search for them.

Bob I <[email protected]> asked "what's the sound of one hand
clapping?", and I said it's a bit like this:

Try turning on "hidden" attribute and then turn off Search in Hidden.

That's not a bad idea. It's still limiting in that I don't know that
the files I want to find *aren't* hidden. For the most part though,
they wouldn't be, so most of the time what i'm looking for should turn
up..

Thanks

I don't know this first had but have read that the only way to keep the
search from checking zip files is to turn off XP's native zip file
function. That's ok anyway if you use another program for zip files --
I use winzip. But you can also turn off the function prior to doing a
search and then reactivate after the search.

To disable XP's built in zip intergration: Start | Run type in
regsver32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll

To re-enable tyep in
regsver32 %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll

It may require a reboot to fully disable or re-enable the support though
I don't know if the effect will be immediate for searching purposes.

Thanks for this. It's a very handy piece of information. It's going
straight into a file on my desktop for future reference.
