In the "Seach for files or folders named" box, can I seach from multiple
files in a single search operation?

For example: can I enter something like:

*.XLS; *.DOC; *.TXT

to seach for Excel, Word and Text files?

Sure, and you don't need the semicolon. A space works just as well.
Here's another tip: It would have been much faster simply to try the
search and see what came up than to post a message and wait for a
response.

Yes you can. Also (you may already know this) but when you search if you use
the *.ext format you don't need a semicolon however if you use .ext without
the * then you need to use the semicolon.

Also Gary, if expediency is such an issue with you then it would have been
much faster simply to answer this persons question than to ruin your
perfectly good answer by being a jerk to someone who did absolutely nothing
wrong (other than in your eyes). I was not aware that one had to try
anything before asking for help here. If that has recently become a rule
please let me know so I can be sure never to come back. I'm sorry for
getting on you like this - I know I'm being every bit the jerk I'm saying you
are. The thing is being mean and being a bully has somehow become acceptable
in newsgroups and I think it's completely out of line (and out of context).
I've been as big a jerk as anyone many times, but I'm not going to stand by
while people get picked on anymore.

Obviously you did not read my answer. I began by answering the question
completely and then suggeated a way to get a quicker answer. There was no
abuse and no suggestion that the user should not have asked. If you think
my answer was mean, or less than helpful, then perhaps you need less
coffee or more sleep.

Gary,

I did read your answer and if you're telling me when you said "here's
another tip:" you weren't being a bit of a dick then my appoologies. The
thing is since that comment wasn't for informational puposes (you obviously
didn't really think they didn't known it would have been faster for them to
check themselves) I didn't know for what other reason, other than to be a
dick, you would have said it.

If we continue this discussion please let's do it via email.

It was a perfectly good suggestion ... the original poster could have
tried the search before posting a question, and if it worked, then he
would not have had to post the question in the first place. Gary's
answer was very helpful and he followed it with a helpful suggestion for
the original poster's future reference. I don't know what you were
thinking.

Where trying before posting would be a problem is if a person had a
question as to what FORMAT C: does .... so I guess it depends on the
skill level of the poster.

Maybe I wasn't thinking at all, as I said in my last post, my appologies if I
was wrong, either way my intentions were good.

You know I'm trying to appease you because there's no sense getting into it
but then I feel like I'm not being true to myself and what I think is the
truth.

Regardless of what you think, Gary wasn't trying to be helpful with that
comment because everyone knows it would be faster to open search and try it
than to post it here. I think Gary was being sardonic when he wrote that
second comment or at best I think he was being admonishing, not trying to
give helpful advice.

No matter what was meant by anyone I still owe Gary an appology because
after re-reading the posts I really overreacted and it was uncalled for, so
I'm sorry Gary.

I really did mean that as a helpful tip. It seems that it simply doesn't
occur to many people to just try things. Maybe they're afraid of breaking
something. In any event, many questions of the "can I" or "what will
happen if" type can be answered that way, and it's usually pretty obvious
which experiments are harmless. A failed search, for example, simply
doesn't produce the results you want. There obviously can be no horrible
consequences.

Apology accepted. You did completely misread my intent. In my
experience, everyone *doesn't* know that, or at least doesn't think of it.
