Searching for files or folders

When using the Search tool from the "Start" button ("Start - Search - For Files or Folders") and pointing the search to the "C" drive, the search does not look in all folders on the "C" drive (it looks in some folders but not others. The skipped folders are always the same ones). If I want to search in the skipped folders, I have to point to the skipped folders specifically in order to force a search in these folders.

Which folders are skipped? Do they perhaps have the hidden or system
attribute skipped?
