Hi - I'm trying to do the following:

In Cell B1, I have the value "Smith, Joe"
In cell a4, I have a total number of hours for Joe Smith: 40. Depending on
the detail hours reported, the total hours may be in a different line. For
example, if Joe had 6 line items of detail, the total would be in line a6.

So, I have to first find Joe Smith in the spreadsheet, then find the total
line. Any ideas?

"Cell", "B1", "Spreadsheet".
Sounds like an Excel question.

You have posted this question to the wrong newsgroup.
The access in this groups title refers to Microsoft Access, a database
program.
Please repost to the correct newsgroup for the Excel program you are
using.
I would suggest you include your Windows and Office version number in
your message. It might make a difference.

It sounds like you're using Excel based on the cell references; this newsgroup
is for a different program, Microsoft Access. The webpage can be confusing and
may have misled you - scroll down the list of subject areas and repost in an
Excel newsgroup. A bit more description of your spreadsheet's structure would
help ("a different line" - how can you tell which line!?)
