searchindexer.exe that might as well be a virus

I have a process on my XP: searchindexer.exe that might as well be a virus
since it slows down my machine (I think).

When I turn on the machine it appears to be reading the disk like crazy for
quite a while holding up anything I want to do.

I went into AddRemove windows components and turned off indexing service but
that didn't remove the process.

I tried to remove the from "currently installed programs" Windows Search
4.0 but was told that many programs were in stalled after it and I didn't
know if removing was OK.

I tried to lower its priority but was denied access.

Can you suggest what I can do?

Have you tried to disable it in the services.msc. Right click on Indexing and
select Disable and hit Apply when backing out. Reboot

I can find services.msc.

In TaskManager if I right click on ServiceIndexing or services.exe, I don't
get the Disable option.
In MsConfig, which is what I thought you refereed to, I don't find
services.msc.
In Start/All Programs/Administrative Tools/Services Right clicking
IndexingServices does not produce a Disable option..
Where is services.msc shown?

Also, as I think about it, I'm guessing that if I stop the service I'll
still get present with the Windows Search window when I search but the data
will be stale. I probably should be removing Windows Search 4.0 but worry
about messing up other programs. What do you think?

If I remove it and then have problems with say, VS2010, I could probably
reinstall Windows Search 4.0, can't I?

You disable the service in services.msc, not in Task Manager.
Also, as I think about it, I'm guessing that if I stop the service

Windows Search 4 is an addon that nothing else depends on. Lots of
people have found it to be undesireable and have uninstalled it. I
don't think you need to worry.

I didn't know I was suppose to RUN services.msc

I removed it and hid the update in MS Update.

If you download the file here.

"Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157)"

and then open the WindowsSearch-KB940157-XP-x86-enu.exe file with
a copy of 7-ZIP, you can see

searchindexer.exe 439808 bytes

so it's in there. If you were to install that download, you'd
end up with that thing too.
