MS Vista's 'searchfilterhost.exe' tries to call home (to Microsoft)
constantly.

This appears to be a new "feature" in Vista.

Does anyone know why MS wants to hear from me (my computer) so often?

I think it may vary, but the last effort was to 131.107.115.28.

That's the address for crl.microsoft.com.

Not sure exactly what SearchFilterHost is doing, but that looks like it's
consulting a Certificate Revocation List server. So it's quite plausible
certificate verification activity. "Phoning home" is more normal in a
PKI-oriented world, than in days or yore.

Other folks may have more precise info about what's going on ...

its reporting back to Microsoft that it found all of your child porn
