Searches under Vista

In cases of last resort, the older Windows versions allowed one to search
for words or phrases within files. It was slow, but sometimes helpful (or
necessary).

Try as I may, I cannot get a word search to work on Vista. Is that just the
way it is??

I have tried using Tags, but that didnt work either.

Thanks in advance

Thanks Dave.. If I interpret this correctly, the old word search is gone..

It's built into Vista, you don't need to install the desktop search
anymore. The old 'word search' isn't gone, it's on your start button.

Well, I find the search routine but it doesnt seem to find words or phrases
embedded in a file. I have tested it with search phrases which I know
exist in target files. It just doesnt find them.

Maybe Im just doing something wrong.

Well, hang me for lying... I went back into the search window and performed
the same search that had failed in the past. This time it worked perfectly,
and
picked up four files with the target phrase. The last time, it found only
one.

I apparently just did something wrong.

type the wildcard character * before your phrase, else V searches only
for filenames BEGINNING with the phrase.

Yes, POS.

Strange, I don't need to prefix with an * . If I do a search on LOVE I get:

This Love
I'll Do Anything for Love
Love Potion #9

etc

That works because of the word break (space) in the file name..
The word break makes it look like Love is the first word.
It should also find
This-Love
This.love

You are correct. I tried OV and did not get LOVE (I did get OVER of course
as you pointed out I should). The wildcarding of *OV does give me LOVE.
You learn something new everyday! Thanks for the useful information You
have no idea how much I learn about Vista reading this newsgroup.
