Search won't work

When I go to Start > Search in Windows XP Pro, nothing happens. If I open
Windows Explorer and right click on a folder and click search, nothing
happens. The only way that I can get to the search feature is by going to
Windows Explorer, clicking on a folder or drive and hitting the Search button
at the top. I don't know why. Can anyone help?

Try this:

Restore Classic Search in Windows XP:

It takes away the search assistant but you can probably live with that. I'm
not sure what is wrong with your current problems but this worked for the
last person whom I helped that had this problem.

Thanks for the reply. I tried that, but still have the same problem. I do
like the older search interface, though, so thanks. The Start button shortcut
to 'Search' still doesn't do anything. Any more ideas?

From Kelly http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf
file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files
from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer
Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also
click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf
folder.

And if that doesn't work what happens when you press the WinKey + F?

The Win+F key doesn't do anything either. I installed the srchasst.inf file.
I logged off and on again. Still nothing. I will do a restart right now and
if it works after that, I'll let you know. Otherwise, it's still not working.
I appreciate all your guys' help with this.

There's another post with Kelly's solution listed (trust me on this, she's
usually right and probably has your solution there) but if there's some
chance that they don't work I think the search files are covered by system
file checker so you could start > run > type SFC /SCANNOW and hit enter,
insert the CD when asked, and go get some coffee.
