Search Results window acting sluggish and crashing

First off, I should make clear this is not a problem with
searching for files, it's a problem with the search window
once the files are found.

For some reason, after I do a search in Windows XP and
more than a few results turn up, things get really
sluggish when I try to select multiple files in the search
window. CPU usage goes way up and it gets choppy. The same
goes for trying to perform an operation on a bunch of
selected files. It takes a while to delete them, and
sometimes they won't even delete. I'll get "Cannot read
from disk" or something like that. Handling files in the
search results window can also crash Explorer too.

I've found that unregistering zipfldr.dll reduces the
sluggishness some, and prevents Explorer from crashing.
But still, this doesn't seem normal. Anyone have any idea
how to fix this?

Does this only happen when the search results contain
certain types of files, such as avi ? Or does it happen
regardless of file types?

It happens regardless of what type of files come up in the
results. I just tried searching for *.jpg and selected
about 40 files, tried to delete them as a test, and the
window has hung. Also, task manager says explorer.exe is
using most of the CPU cycles.

XP Search has many issues....I am only posting to include:

Stop Search from Scanning ZIP files:

Un-register the zip and cab file dlls, then re-register them after that. Go
to Start/Run and type in:

Before Search:
regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll
regsvr32 /u cabview.dll

After Search:
regsvr32 zipfldr.dll
regsvr32 cabview.dll

I always found it interesting that MS didn't offer this thru the user interface.
The irony is perfect. It's a confusing tool, many things to turn on or off,
yet basic functionality choices are missing. What were they thinking?
The standard advice seems to be to install "agent ransack" if you're looking for
a lean, mean, fast file search.
