i've tried rebuilding the index (several times) and checking index the
entire C: drive, and still it can't find files which are there, side by
side, in the same folder, with the same name and a different number (May
1.jpg, May 2.jpg, etc.).

Windows Desktop Search worked in XP, but with Vista it's damn useless. At
least for me.

If somebody can please tell me how to get this piece of crap working right,
I'll appreciate it. Thank you.

Nice attitude for asking for help. Maybe someone else will have pity on
you and offer some advice.

Thank you for your exceptionally helpful reply. It goes a great distance in
assisting in alleviating my continuing frustration with this problem. :-)

I think you need to be nominated for World's Most Helpful Usenet Group
member. :-) In fact, I'll do that right now! :-) And just to make sure
your nomination is accepted, I'll second it too. :-)

the only advice to be given is keep away from vista as long as possible!!!

If you want a horrid OS go dig up that old copy of windows Me you had..

even that is better than Vista!

you will not find any help here from the people who use vista.

They keep claiming that it works for them flawlessly...
If you say you have a problem with vista, its your or your hardwares falt or
a bad driver.

Im starting to believe that all these vista people are being planted or even
worse is one person
with various identities paid by microsoft to give the impression that vista
is good....

Well capin' crunch I believe you're been transported into never never land.
You have no idea what you're talking about concerning anything MS.
Let me tell you in a language I know you'll understand:
gamacu malaka.
Ok?

ME is paradise compared to Vista!
And it is amazing that Vista works FLAWLESSLY for ALL the MVPs

I've had much the same problem. The indexed searches simply don't find
most of what I search for (like a data file name that I use frequently
but got misplaced into the wrong folder).

Don't forget the most important setting, set it to display results for ALL
users. I'll bet a lot of your old files are "owned" by a different user
(i.e. your old XP account).

That's what happened on my machine. Once I set it to display from all users,
everything showed up.

Where does one find the "display from all users" setting?

Lang

Under customize start menu (right click the search bar and select
properties).
Scroll down to the "Search Files" settings, and check "Search entire index".

There is a setting for "search this users files" that I think it defaults
to. (As it should, you wouldn't want some other user able to search your
files...:) )

I had a cold chill running down my spine when you asked, because I did it a
while ago and forgot how I did. Its quite buried.... :)

Indeed it -is- buried. And... once found... it's no longer buried, is it?
