I am helping a neighbor on his computer which had plain old windows XP until
I installed the SP2. When I try to use search this is the message I get: A
file that is required to run search companion cannot be found. You may need to
run setup. I know that there was a solution for this before I installed SP2
but since installing SP2 this fix will not work. The fix I used was this: I
went to start and typed in %systemroot%/inf and found the file Srchasst.inf.
I right clicked on it and tried the install but it would not install. I think
this fix would have worked if I had of done it before installing SP2 but I
did not know that this condition existed until I installed SP2. Does anyone
know of an simple fix now that SP2 is installed or is it going to be a
complicated matter. Thanks.

I'm not certain it's the answer, but have you added the hot fixes that came
after SP2? There are a lot of them; best to let auto update handle them as
some are sequence oriented.

Search - Doesn't Work

Try this. It has worked for other folks.

1. Go to C:\Windows\srchasst or %windir%\srchasst and delete everything
that you can.
2. Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

regsvr32 /u %windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

You will see a message like this if successful...
---------------------------
RegSvr32
---------------------------
DllUnregisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\srchasst\srchui.dll succeeded.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

3. Go to C:\Windows\Inf or %windir%\Inf right click srchasst.inf and
click install.

Wesley, are you saying to delete the srchasst folder or everthing within this
folder? Could doing this cause any problems with Windows XP? The reason I ask
is because I am moving form the area and this is a neighbors computer. If I
screw it up I most likely won't have the time to repair or reinstall the
operating system in case something would happen. I tried the two websites you
gave but I have already tried that and it did not help. Most likely because I
had already installed SP2 on this computer. I think I read where this had to
be done before SP2 was installed or it would not work. What do you think
about Pop's idea about doing all the updates? Do you think that this would
help? Thanks for you help Wesley.

Wayne,

This is from a fellow that did it, where I originally go it from.

Ok... I've been reading through the posts on the search companion all day
and I've finally figured it out.

I went in to C:\Windows\srchasst\ and deleted everything I could
I then unregistered the srchui.dll file
Then I went into C:\Windows\Inf\ right clicked srchasst.inf and clicked
install.

This did it.

A couple notes.
I tried just reregistering the srchui.dll file and that did not help
I tried just installing srchasst.inf without deleting the files and that did
not work as well.
I tried to reregister shell32.dll, no luck
I ran SFC and ran a complete scan - didn't fix it.
I ran the automated system recovery and this did not work as well...
I tried copying the C:\Windows\srchasst\mui\0409\*.* files from a known good
computer to the computer with the problem and this didn't fix it either.

So, I don't know why everything had to be deleted and reinstalled, but it
worked.

Thanks to the community for all their posts that helped me out.

Regards,
Michael Graf
