search function not working (XP Home SP2)

Running XP Home Edition Ver 2002 SP2, Gateway 500GR P4 3GHz, ZoneAlert.
I am unable to conduct searchs of any type using the search function found
in the start menu or the context menu. I enter the search paramaters and
then click 'search now', the magnifying glass makes a round or two (about 2
seconds) and then stops, with no results showing. Also I cannot find the
'preference' menu I keep reading about in the help files regarding the search
function. I have tried several fixes mentioned in the ng's and have read
numerous post, but none address this particular problem. My search function
in IE works fine for internet searches. Help! It driving me bonkers!

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type:

SFC /SCANNOW

Tried that, still not working. Will reinstalling the search function help?
If so how does one do this?
