Search function does not work anymore

The ability to search my hard drives has ceased to
operate. I can bring up the search screen and enter
parameters, but once that's done, search seizes and the
only way to exit is to CTRL-ALT-DEL and end the task.
Damn shame Microsoft makes you PAY to fix their problems.
