Search function changed

L

LAH

Windows 98SE (yes, I know it's old)
Internet Explorer 6

When trying to do a search, the "Next" button in the left pane beside "New"
is grayed out. When I try to customize I have two lists to choose from, one
in "Find a Web Page" and also another list for "Choose a search provider for
address bar searches". There are no other categories. Am I losing my mind?
Didn't there use be more categories? When I change to another search engine
in "Customize" it will use that search engine but the "next" button is still
grayed out and I cannot use it to do a search with another engine unless I
go back into "Customize". When I first try and search, I get a message
"loading search settings" before it finally does the search. I don't
remember seeing that before.

I've run AdAware and got rid of a few things but nothing that seemed
particularly alarming. Ran virus scanner and it come up clean.

I downloaded and installed .Net Framework a few days ago. I don't know if
that had anything to do with it or not. I also had software program that
became corrupt and I reinstalled it. Again I don't know if that's
coincidence or not.

I've tried repairing Internet Explorer and also Reset Web Setting - no joy.
Any ideas? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I am updated as far as Microsoft will allow with this old system. I wish I
knew if the last security update changed the search function but there was
just too much time between the last update and the use of search to be sure
of anything.

Well join the crowd. I don't believe it has anything to do with spyware or
a virus. I have WinXP with all the updates and IE 6 and all updates for
that.
My search changed also. I started another thread in this news group about
the same thing. I ran all the programs that I was told to run and a few
extras also. Nothing helped.
I am willing to believe that Microsoft changed something on their end to
cause this.
I posted my hijack this log on another site and have had no response to
date.

Hi Anna :)

Just so you know, I'm still looking into your problem. I am trying to find
out more about it from some higher sources. If you find out anything new,
I'll report is back to your original thread as well.

Anna, please post back to /your/ thread ("Search has changed") and give us
the a link to your forum thread in which you've posted your HijackThis log.

Trust me: "Microsoft" has changed nothing on their end.

Thank you.

Heads up. Once you update to IE7 you will no longer have a search pane.

Ok, simple instructions on how to control Search in IE6 here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/personalize.mspx

If the *next* button is greyed out *after* conducting a search, it could be
because English(US) has been removed from the list of available languages.
Go to tools\internet options\general {languages}. Make sure that English
(US) is installed, and that it is at the top of your list.

Possible fixes:

Cannot change search providers after clicking search:

How to use search assistant (note, categories can be manually 'removed' -
this will show you how to get them back):
