Search for files stops responding

[Wish I was diving]

When I try to search for files or folders on my computer the program stops
responding as soon as I click 'search'. I have to end the program manually,
after that the icons on my desktop disappear but reappear after a few
seconds. No other programs seem to be effected.
Does anyone have an idea what the cause may be and how to fix this?

Thanks Elmo - I'll go through this tomorrow. Got to go to the football pitch
now to have my old bones wacked around a little by guys 25 years younger

Sorry Elmo - that took a while. Been busy. However, the least one can do if
people take the effort of replying is to come back at them and tell them the
outcome.
Well, as for the Search Assistant - it still doesn't work. I did however
find a link to Agent Ransack on the page you provided and installed it. Since
it is working wonderfully I don't really care anymore about the Search
Assistant.
